Your First Class: What Actually Happens

Nervous? Normal. Here's the play-by-play of a first class so nothing is a surprise.

By Sensei Bill Roeder

A karate instructor coaching a young student at Waverly Martial Arts in Patchogue.

Everybody is nervous before their first class. Knowing what to expect cuts that in half.

Before class

Show up 10 minutes early. Wear something you can move in. We hand you a uniform if you've claimed the intro.

During class

Warm-up, drills, a few basic techniques, and a short cool-down. An instructor stays close to you the whole time.

After class

Quick chat about what's next, your schedule, and any questions. No pressure, no sales pitch.
